18th FINA Visa Diving World Cup 2012

Part of the London Prepares series, the 18th FINA Visa Diving World Cup 2012 allowed the London 2012 Organising Committee to test crucial aspects of its operations in preparation for the 2012 Games.

This was the first ever sporting event to be staged in the new Aquatics Centre and provided the first opportunity for divers to test the waters and compete under the wave-like roof.

About the sport

Diving is an elegant yet dramatic sport that requires acrobatic excellence and supreme coordination skills, as athletes dive from heights of up to 10m into the waters below.

The 18th FINA Visa Diving World Cup 2012 was the last Individual and Synchronised Diving qualification opportunity for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In the Individual events, divers competed in the 10m Platform and 3m Springboard competitions. In each men’s and women’s event, the 18 semi-finalists  qualified for a place at the London 2012 Games.

In the Synchronised events, two divers dived at the same time alongside each other. There were two competitions for both men and women; the 3m Springboard and 10m Platform. The four highest ranked teams, that had not previously qualified, achieved a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

About the Aquatics Centre

The brand new Aquatics Centre has been designed by acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, and features a wave-like roof and an innovative diving boards design.

The venue has a 50m competition swimming pool, a 25m competition diving pool, a 50m warm-up pool and a ‘dry’ warm-up area for divers.

London 2012 Games

During the Games, the Aquatics Centre will be the venue for Diving, Swimming, Paralympic Swimming, Synchronised Swimming and the Modern Pentathlon swimming events.

The Diving event in the 2012 Games will feature both men’s and women’s competitions, with Individual and Synchronised events off the 3m and 10m diving boards.  A total of 136 divers will compete for eight gold medals.
