Information for local residents and Park users

Greenwich Park hosted two events in the London Prepares series this summer: the Greenwich Park Eventing Invitational on 4-6 July, and the UIPM World Cup Final on 9-10 July.

We chose these dates because they fall outside the main school holiday period, helping us minimise disruption. Both events will be on a smaller scale than the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Before the events took place, we undertook some preparatory works and installation of some temporary structures and facilities in the Park. In addition, a number of mitigation measures were taken forward with the agreement of the Advisory Group and under the supervision of The Royal Parks.

These measures will ensure that the trees and other important features in the Park are protected.

Greenwich Council has also established an Advisory Group of statutory consultees – The Royal Parks, Natural England, English Heritage and Sport England – who monitor our plans.

All works were approved by the local planning authority following agreement with the Advisory Group.

We are committed to keeping Greenwich Park open for as long as possible and minimising disruption before, during and after the London Prepares series in 2011.

However, to protect you and the Park, we will need to restrict access to certain areas during event set-up, competition and removal. Details of this can be found in the our brochure for local residents

Public access to Greenwich Park and reinstatement:

Just 24 hours after the final test event on Sunday 10 July, almost 80 per cent of the event site was re-opened to the public. LOCOG will continue to work closely with The Royal Parks to re-open the remaining part of the Park as soon as possible.

Reinstatement works Greenwich Park:

Before the work commenced on the Greenwich Park test events, The Royal Parks had given careful consideration to what reinstatement works they expected to be necessary and agreed these with LOCOG, who is responsible for funding them. This is based on many years of experience The Royal Parks have of working on a wide range of events and reinstating the land afterwards.

The Royal Parks and its grounds maintenance contractor are ready to commence work as soon as areas of the park have been cleared and handed back to them. The main work will include aeration and over seeding, however some additional work may be required.

Further information about the reinstatement work will be made available on this website in August, once the site has been cleared. LOCOG and The Royal Park will work closely together in order to minimise the impact of this work on park users.
